Scenario
Elwood Curtis’ college dreams are shattered on a two-lane Florida highway. He is sentenced to the underworld of Nickel Academy, a brutal prison embedded in the Jim Crow South, for an innocent pregnancy. He meets another guardian, the all-seeing Turner. The two black teenagers form an alliance: Turner shares survival tips, and Elwood maintains his optimistic worldview. Against the backdrop of the burgeoning civil rights movement, Elwood and Turner’s existence seems worlds away from the brilliant speech of the Rev. Martin Luther King. Despite Nickel’s cruelty, Elwood tries to cling to his humanity and instill a new perspective in Turner.
