I read the original novel many times when I was a teenager, decades ago. This is a great story with very effective imagery, highly recommended, if a bit dated – published in 1949, seventy-five years ago. While I have often wondered over the years if this would ever become a movie, I was not expecting this limited series adaptation, so I was very surprised when it arrived. “People come and go, but the land remains” is a quote I often use.
I ended up saying, “Wow!
I watched the first episode with some trepidation. That was really good!” Seeing Ish staring into the smoke from Em’s house brings the imagery of the book to life. Of course, it’s been modernized in many ways, but the important aspects of the plot remain virtually unchanged. The rattlesnake bite, finding Lucky the dog (the princess in the book), Milt and Ann.

Other changes, like limiting Ish’s trip to Las Vegas and not Atlantic City, make sense and aren’t critical to the character interactions. Also, the way the book is structured makes a limited series a great choice to produce. I’m definitely looking forward to the rest of this series. “One Hundred Years of Solitude” is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month.
