Scenario
Two women with different lives come together
One struggles to survive after being pushed out by his mother, while the other runs a thriving company. I was hesitant to watch Beauty in Black because of Tyler Perry’s inconsistency in creating great content, but I wanted to give it justice by watching the ending.
So I did it
wrap up. It was full of intrigue, vulgarity, violence, twists and turns.
The cast is solid with believable performances throughout the series
If one tried to create a melodrama that combined elements of Empire (at its peak), P-Valley and Dynasty (at its peak), the result would be Black Beauty. I struggled with 2 frustrations: the overuse of the N word repeated exchanges between black characters and the existence of negative black stereotypes.
Tyler P has a lot of influence and power in Hollywood
It will be refreshing to see him continue to amplify images and voices that are positive to the black community. People (within the black community and beyond) take their cues from this content and because a black filmmaker is behind the camera can focus more on the accuracy of its portrayals.
He can do better
That said, if one wants a soapy roller coaster ride of a melodrama, I recommend Beauty in Black.
