Scenario
The life and early days of America’s most original singer/songwriter over the past 50 years… I vividly remember hearing Mink Deville’s “Mixed Up Shook Up Girl.” on the radio when it came out in 1970. And yet, when I looked for the record in the stores where I lived, it was like I was looking for the Holy Grail.
I have had no luck finding him or anyone else by this mysterious artist
Finally, many years later, I was delighted to find a compilation album called Savoir Faire. which contains not only the song I’ve been dying to hear for so long, but also many other incredibly great tunes. The documentary The Sky Stood Still delves into the mystique surrounding Mink Deville frontman Willy Deville.
He later recorded in Europe and lived for a time in New Orleans
His first three albums were released by Capitol, but were dropped altogether due to disappointing sales. I was very impressed with the archival footage of the wonderful early years of the band, but I felt that exploring Warts and Willy’s long, slow decline was emotionally draining. I suspected that drug use contributed to the deterioration in his later years, but I had no idea how widespread it was.
